A circle of friends
Several hours after geneticist Oliver Smithies received a call from Stockholm informing him he and two other scientists had won the Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology for their work in gene targeting, colleagues and admirers gathered to honor Smithies with an impromptu celebration at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Smithies said he was happy to have made so many other people so happy. In this photo, he is just below the center of the frame, speaking to a gentleman wearing a suit.
