A Road Map for Research

Turning medical research into tangible benefits for people.

by Angela Spivey

Carolina researchers have won three of only twenty-one major planning grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health under its "NIH Roadmap" initiative. No other university won three of these grants. Awards are expected to total more than five million dollars over the next three years.

The "NIH Roadmap" is intended to transform medical research capabilities and accelerate the translation of research findings into tangible benefits for people. The program funds projects that will attack difficult problems using interdisciplinary collaboration and sophisticated computational techniques and informatics.

The three grants awarded to Carolina fund efforts to plan and establish a research-oriented interdisciplinary obesity center; to explore noninvasive ways of assessing inflammation, including computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging; and to create the Carolina Center for Exploratory Genetic Analysis, which will refine and use methods of analyzing genetic data and its expression in people.end of story
