In celebration of musician and composer
Thelonious Monk, a North Carolina native, the 1998 Carolina Jazz Festival
(February 23-28) brought together jazz musicians from all over the country.
Pictured above is bebop pianist Barry Harris as he conducts an improvisational
music lesson for UNC-CH students and faculty members. Harris, who is one
of the top interpreters of Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell, incorporates
aspects of both styles into his own musical personality. A jazz educator
since the 1950s, Harris has won numerous awards for his efforts as both
a performer and an educator. He has also played and recorded with other
jazz artists, including Max Roach, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Miles
Davis, Flip Phillips, Cannonball Adderley, and Dexter Gordon. Harris was
captured in action by photographer and 1992 Carolina graduate Steve Exum.
