Jack Griffith, a biochemist and electron microscopist, is also an avid photographer. Both of these images were selected by Terry Magnuson, chair of the Department of Genetics, to appear on the cover of the journal Genesis, which Magnuson edits.

This hummingbird image is actually a composite of two photos. Griffith took both at his house using a NikonD1 digital camera with a 300-millimeter lens and a flash at 1/13,000 of a second.
