n election
day, North Carolina voters will consider a bond referendum that would
allow the state to borrow $3.1 billion to improve facilities in its
community colleges and at 16 campuses in the University of North Carolina
system. The referendum follows a comprehensive study, mandated by the
N.C. General Assembly, which found that many facilities in the UNC system
badly need replacement or repair.
Founded in 1793, UNC-Chapel Hill is the nation’s first public university,
and its oldest buildings have long been regarded as historical treasures.
But as higher education has advanced into the age of lasers and computers,
Carolina finds itself struggling to preserve the cultural assets of
an antique campus at the same time it strives to maintain its leadership
in science education and research. In this Endeavors, we take
a brief look at some of the issues from the point of view of several
Carolina students and faculty members.
