The DLAM Advisory Committee was created to enhance communication between the Division and investigators and improve the planning process for future research activities involving animals. The charges for the committee have been defined as follows:
-
Develop mechanisms to collect information on the kinetics, type and volume of research animal use or of forthcoming substantial faculty recruitment to advise DLAM on their potential operational impact or need for facility and resource development.
-
Advise the Dean(s) and Senior Administration of the University of the need for resource developments (e.g., such as core laboratories) within DLAM that would be beneficial to the scientific mission of the University.
-
Build and represent the consensus of our scientific community on any matters related to animal care and use for presentation to the IACUC or DLAM as appropriate.
-
Play an advisory role in the periodic major adjustments in the per diem recharge system, recommending methods of staged implementation (if any) and suggesting the level and distribution of the central support (i.e., subsidy) among the various animals species.
-
Under resource and space limited conditions, recommend and develop a process for determining the allocation of space and services.
Some of the Advisory Committee’s activities to date have included: the review and approval of DLAM’s per diem rates and other fees; oversight and evaluation of an external review of DLAM; and participation in the planning and design of a large rodent facility. Committee members represent the broad scope of research endeavors utilizing animals, and investigators are encouraged to contact committee members with concerns and suggestions.
