WINFIELD SCOTT BLACKWOOD OF CHAPEL HILL DEPARTED THIS LIFE, at his home, to join his Maker on August 27, 2006.
Born April 29, 1951, Scott was the son of Mildred Bennett and Thomas Jefferson Blackwood, the grandson of Eva Riggsbee and Winfield Scott Blackwood and Hattie Daniel and John William “Pless” Bennett.
Scott was a 34-year employee of UNC-Chapel Hill. He served in the University’s Office of Sponsored Research as Senior Director, Post Award Services, where he displayed a consistent acute dedication to his responsibilities. Although Scott gave extreme dedication to his job, he was involved in other numerous interests and activities. A member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church since childhood, Scott served as church Trustee Treasurer, Usher/Greeter, Chair of the current church building project, as well as assisting regularly in any event requiring his expertise as planner, decorator, coordinator, or promoter.
For many years Scott showed horses and drew great pleasure from his involvement with his friends and associates in the horse world. Scott was also an avid Tarheel fan, consistently supporting his teams’ efforts no matter their win-lose status. At the time of his death he was serving on the UNC Athletic Council.
He was also dedicated to his family; he loved and appreciated good music; his personal attire was always extremely suitable and to perfection, no matter the occasion. Scott was dedicated to whatever he committed himself, always going the “second mile” to make certain that he gave any task his very best.
